The Coalition has put further detail around its emerging energy policy, promising to scrap net zero and remove federal restrictions it says are impeding new coal, oil and gas development.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor and Nationals Leader Senator Matt Canavan used a visit to the Swanbank gas-fired power station in Queensland on Monday to argue that greater use of domestic gas and other Australian energy resources would be central to reducing electricity prices and supporting industry.
The announcement goes beyond a general commitment to expand gas supply. Taylor said a Coalition government would negotiate directly with state governments to increase production, while Canavan said it would also remove restrictions affecting fossil-fuel projects from federal environmental, financing and export-credit arrangements.
